AP* Human Geography - June 21 to 24, 2010

AP* Human Geography introduces the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use and alteration of the Earth's surface. Spatial concepts and landscape analysis are used to examine human social organization and its environmental consequences. The AP* course considers the following:

  • Geography: Its Nature and Perspectives - the importance of spatial organization, the location of places, people and events in the understanding of human life
  • Population - understanding the ways in which the human population is organized geographically
  • Cultural Patterns and Processes - learn how geographers assess the spatial dimensions of groups as defined by language, religion, race, ethnicity and gender
  • Political Organization of Space - political patterns reflect ideas about how Earth's surface should be organized
  • Agriculture and Rural Land Use - the origin, spread and characteristics of agriculture and the impact of agriculture on the quality of life and the environment
  • Industrialization and Economic Development - the geographic elements of industrialization and development
  • Cities and Urban Land Use - study of cities, where cities are located and why, internal structure and landscapes of cities and what they are like

Judith Boyd Ware

Fontbonne University, St. Louis, MO

Judy Ware earned a B.A. in history from Lake Erie College and an M.A. in American History Pre-Civil War from the University of Colorado – Boulder.  Ware began her teaching career in 1981.  Judy has taught geography, a series of history courses, and AP* Economics since 1988.  From 1998-2005, Ware was program director of the Missouri Geographic Alliance.  In 1997 she was among the early “recruits” to teach AP* Human Geography.  Ware is an adjunct professor at Fontbonne University (St. Louis, MO) and Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO).  Ware is a College Board reader for AP* Human Geography.
